Penguins Casino Future

The casino corporation that has planned partnering with the Penguins to build a casino and new hockey arena in Pittsburgh has agreed to forfeit millions to settle a lawsuit connected to a failed casino project in Missouri. Biloxi, Miss.-based Isle of Capri Casinos Inc. agreed on Dec. 9 to pay $14 million to Jefferson County, Mo., to settle a three year-old lawsuit stemming from the breakdown by Isle of Capri to build a casino in Kimmswick, Mo. In 2002, Isle of Capri was fined $250,000 by the Missouri Gaming Commission for making misrepresentations on the application.

Company officials say problems with the Jefferson County request have their roots in a claim submitted by the Lady Luck Gaming Corp. which originally worked on the offer to build the casino. Isle of Capri purchased the Lady Luck Gaming Corp. in March 2000. Isle of Capri was established in 1991 and operates 15 casinos in Nevada, Louisiana, Colorado, Mississippi, Iowa and Missouri.
